CHICAGO BACH PROJECT 2013
Johann Sebastian Bach
Mass in B Minor, BWV 232
March 27, 2013
The Chicago Bach Project, presented by Soli Deo Gloria, returned for its third year with Bach’s great choral masterpiece, the sublime Mass in B Minor, conducted by SDG's Founding Artistic Director, Maestro John Nelson. St. Vincent de Paul Church in Lincoln Park, with its soaring ceilings, stained-glass windows, and beautiful front altar, offered a stunning visual environment for concert-goers to hear the work performed in a sacred space, as Bach originally intended.
"Molding long lines sans baton, the conductor infused his singers and instrumentalists with his own keen sense of musical and spiritual identification. His brisk to moderate tempos allowed each section its own musical integrity and expressive weight within the elaborate symmetries of Bach's grand design."—John von Rhein, Classical Music Critic, Chicago Tribune
“Soprano Nicole Cabell… spun the florid lines of her ‘Laudamus te’with freshness, purity and agility.”—John von Rhein,Chicago Tribune
“In the ‘Benedictus,’[Jane] Henschel brought considerable beauty and poignancy to the climax of the work.”—Dennis Polkow, ChicagoClassicalReview.com
“Veteran tenor Stanford Olsen sang a warmly expressive ‘Benedictus.’” —John von Rhein,Chicago Tribune
“Bass-baritone Matthew Brook brought musicality and dignity to both of his solo sections.”—John von Rhein, Chicago Tribune
