The Richard G. Gieser Commission Endowment

Richard Gieser

Since the founding of SDG in 1993, Dr. Richard Gieser has dedicated time, talents, and treasure toward the mission of creating new works of classical sacred music. The results thus far are 43 commissioned works from 32 composers of 10 nationalities, with premieres and repeat performances in concert halls and houses of worship across the United States, Great Britain, and Europe. To ensure this important legacy endures, SDG has established The Richard G. Gieser Commission Endowment.

Securing the future of classical sacred music

Typically, SDG commissions have been funded by project-specific—often one-time—gifts from a small group of loyal donors, among whom Dr. Richard Gieser, Board Chairman Emerita of SDG Music foundation, has consistently been in the vanguard. The Richard G. Gieser Commission Endowment has been established as a permanently restricted fund to guarantee the creation of new works of classical sacred music for future generations.

Since the endowment was conceived to honor Dr. Gieser's 80th birthday last year, we have set $80,000 as our goal for the endowment corpus, and we are now a quarter of the way there. With prudent investment and future donations, the core fund and the annual yield will grow and expand the endowment’s potential.

Once the initial goal has been met, we will have a guaranteed minimum of $4,000 per year to seed the commission of a psalm setting or chamber piece. With prudent investment and future donations, the core fund and the annual yield will grow and expand the endowment’s potential.

Your support will help honor and preserve a great legacy of generosity and fortify SDG’s ability to continue commissioning new works and new composers of classical sacred music.

A message from Dr. Gieser

I have been deeply touched by the establishment of this endowment and by the generosity of my friends and colleagues in supporting it.

The commissioning process will begin when the fund reaches its initial goal of $80,000. Right now, we are a quarter of the way there. The typical cost for a work is about $1,000 per minute of music. Since we will be spending only the income from the endowment, this gives you an idea of why it’s important to build up the fund as much as possible.

We are ready to go. We just need to build up the endowment so that we can have the money to proceed. I hope we can count on your support.
