Tuesday, October 25, 2011 . . . Circle the date. It's time to celebrate. A musical and visual feast is arriving! It's the U.S. release date for two new sacred masterwork DVDs in The Soli Deo Gloria Collection: Beethoven's Missa Solemnis and Haydn's The Creation (Die Schöpfung), conducted by John Nelson and produced by Soli Deo Gloria and Idéale Audience.
Beethoven Missa Solemnis DVD
Beethoven wrote that “music is the electrical soil in which the spirit lives, thinks & invents,” and this DVD of his rarely performed choral masterpiece, Missa Solemnis, beautifully brings to life the composer’s spiritual intent. As one audience member put it, “I was absolutely moved and transported.”
Reflecting on the making of this DVD, conductor John Nelson describes it as “…thrilling. We professionals who spend our lives making music are blessed to do what we do. But it is not every day that we experience everything coming together in a kind of perfection. This was that day.”
The performances for this production of Beethoven’s Missa Solemnis were filmed in Lisbon, Portugal in February 2010 with John Nelson conducting the Chamber Orchestra of Europe, the Gulbenkian Choir and soloists Tamara Wilson, Elizabeth DeShong, Nikolai Schukoff and Brindley Sherratt.
DVD Bonus features include interviews with conductor John Nelson and Peter Readman (chairman of the Chamber Orchestra of Europe), an introductory video about Soli Deo Gloria and previews of other DVDs in The Soli Deo Gloria Collection.
Haydn The Creation DVD
Also from The Soli Deo Gloria Collection is The Creation (Die Schöpfung), the crowning work of Haydn’s life. A deeply religious man, Haydn wrote, “When I think upon my God, my heart is so full of joy that notes dance and leap from my pen.” Conductor John Nelson brings this energy to life in every aspect of the performance: “I don’t think there is any composer who had more of a sense of humor than Haydn. He was just naturally given to fun, to joy, to humor … and you find it all in this music.”
This DVD provides a unique opportunity to experience the beauty of Grote Kerk, one of the oldest churches in the Netherlands, where the acoustics are said to make music sound magical. When The Creation was filmed, with John Nelson and the Netherlands Radio Chamber Philharmonic, the Netherlands Radio Choir with soloists Lisa Milne, Werner Güra, Matthew Rose, Lucy Crowe and Jonathan Beyer, one audience member’s response said it all: “Exquisite music making all around.”
The DVD also includes a 25-minute documentary of rehearsal sessions, with commentary by John Nelson, plus an introductory video about Soli Deo Gloria and previews of other DVDs in The Soli Deo Gloria Collection.
