Old Polish Music
Three bold, dramatic and lyrical works of Henryk Górecki (1933 – 2010) created during the transitional period in Polish music stretching from the post-Stalin cultural thaw to Górecki's lyrical "sacred minimalism." Beatus Vir, scored for a large ensemble, was commissioned by Cardinal Karol Wojtyła (later to become Pope John Paul II) for the commemoration on the 900th anniversary of the martyrdom of St. Stanisław.
Muzyka staropolska (Old Polish Music), composed in 1969, draws inspiration from the folk music of the Tatra region in the Carpathian Mountains, once a northern outpost of the Ottoman Empire. The piece incorporates folk music elements within the dramatic gestures of modern music.
A sense of timelessness via a rich lyrical expression from Palestrina to the present permeates Totus tuus for acapella chorus, in which dramatic, subtly varied repetitions flow toward a breathtakingly serene conclusion.
