Bach's dramatic St. John Passion, according to a BBC reviewer, "used to be in the shadow of the more dignified and contemplative St. Matthew Passion, but recently the St. John has come up in the world as its feverish drama suits modern tastes much better." And Maestro Nelson "skillfully put[s] across the theatrical moments as well as the spiritual catharsis" of this music (Chicago Classical Review).

Since its inauguration in 2011, the Chicago Bach Project, sponsored by Soli Deo Gloria, has presented the trilogy of Bach's masterpiece—the St. Matthew Passion, the St. John Passion, and the Mass in B Minor—in a rotating cycle conducted by John Nelson. Reviewers have hailed the Chicago Bach Project performances with glowing praise:

"among the highlights of the classical music season” (Chicago Tribune)

“sensitively sung and brilliantly played” (Chicago Classical Review)

“a formidable artistic success and a moving experience” (Concerto Net)

“a performance worthy of a timeless masterpiece” (Chicago Tribune)

For 2015, we introduce a new feature to the Chicago Bach Project. The evening will begin with a performance of Alpha and Omega, a moving a cappella choral work commissioned by the SDG Music Foundation from renowned Scottish composer James MacMillan.

Based on a text from the New Testament Book of Revelation, “Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth,” the concise six-minute work will be directed by Donald Nally. The SDG commission was made possible through generous sponsorship from the University of Chicago and Crossway publishers (Wheaton, Illinois).
