Recording begins for second Psalms Project CD

Psallite II cover

On the heels of the enthusiastically received Psalllite CD, released March 2016, recording sessions for Psallite II begin in July 2016. Under the direction of Eric A. Johnson, Cor Cantiamo once again pairs with engineers from Abbey Road Studios (London) to ensure an extraordinarily high quality CD.

The Psallite II album features ten choral works from SDG’s Psalms Project. This new collection of contemporary choral works represents some of today’s foremost composers, including three Pulitzer Prize-winners: Aaron Jay Kernis, Paul Moravec, and Yehudi Wyner; and two composition professors: Robert Beaser (The Juilliard School) and James Lee III (Morgan State University). We are especially pleased that the album also features two women composers: Victoria Bond (USA) and Roxanna Panufnik (UK), as well as composers from France (Richard Dubugnon) Wales (John Metcalf), and Sweden (Sven David Sandström).

Song of the Ascents (Robert Beaser)
How Lovely Is Your Dwelling Place (Victoria Bond)
Psalm 10 (Richard Dubugnon)
Glorious Majesty (Aaron Jay Kernis)
Psalm 111 (James Lee III)
Laudate (John Metcalf)
I Will Fear No Evil (Paul Moravec)
Love Endureth (Roxanna Panufnik)
God Be Merciful (Sven David Sandström)
The Lord is close to the heartbroken  (Yehudi Wyner)

"From intensely personal and penitential settings to grand, sweeping, celebratory pageantry, the compositions in SDG's Psalms Project create new sound worlds in which contemporary audiences can experience the Divine. Roxanna Panufnik's Love Endureth, for example, captures a fascinating mix of dramatic text setting while weaving in elements of Spanish Sephardic chants. Dubugnon's Psalm 10 encompasses the anger, frustration and exploration of the power of the Divine found in Psalm 10. John Metcalf's Laudate is simply transcendent. We are thoroughly enjoying the sacred spaces created as we work through this stunning music.”
